Cultura di Base was conceived to respond to an innovative challenge: to experiment with the opening of clinics of a selection of general practitioners of the ASL Città di Torino in places of culture, spread throughout the city, such as museums, libraries and cultural centres of the city. Places characterized by an intense architecture, of recognized architectural design quality and capable of communicating emotions.
The project aimed to verify how a care experience within a place with intense architecture can lead to the reduction of the stress of waiting related and induced to having to stay in an uncomfortable environment, and how it can contribute to increasing the well-being and psycho-physical comfort of the people in care and the caregivers themselves, improving their relationship and work alliance.
The initiative involves Turin's general practitioners and with this choice aims to guarantee a wide and heterogeneous participation of citizens. The place where the family doctor usually works is the outpatient clinic, which is also the first care space encountered in a path of illness and health; the first point of contact between the patient and the National Health System. A place characterized by waiting, contact, relationship. Despite this, family doctors' surgeries are little considered in the experiences of humanization of care places, and are often not designed, but adapted to the needs of the doctor starting from housing solutions.
The role of the experience designer
The experience of architecture is "increased" thanks to the contribution of a user experience designer, involved in developing an experiential format for patients and doctors, starting from real needs and expectations within behavioural, interpretative and emotional reference models already existing in the experience of the patient and the doctor.
The design of the experience derives from the analysis of expectations, the behavioural rituals of the visit and the possible discomfort linked to relocation. Physicians and patients will be guided and accompanied in the experience by a mix of communication solutions and supports, interpretation of flows and spaces and set-up solutions.
The trial lasted 180 days of work, from May to October 2022, involving 7 family doctors and 65 volunteers and covering a total of 1,500 participating patients out of a total of 10,500 involved.
The trial lasted 180 working days, from May to October 2022, involving 7 family doctors and 65 volunteers and covering a total of 1,500 participating patients out of a total of 10,500 involved. This phase was followed by the evaluation of the impact, addressed from a qualitative and quantitative point of view through three types of evaluation: the questionnaires completed by patients, the direct institutional observation by experts in conscious and unconscious relational processes between individuals and the collection of in-depth interviews that will give life to the ethnographic account of the project. The results will be presented at an event open to all.
