To become an object, clay forces us to negotiate with the material and understand its possibilities and limitations. Its use arises first and foremost from a need: to contain, construct, protect, and transport. At a certain point, however, the need becomes a search for a more functional and desirable form; the material enters material culture, and the need becomes a project.
Clay also presents us with a less immediate question. Every resource arises from a withdrawal, from an extraction. In a world of ready-made and standardized products, often difficult to trace back to their origins, returning to the material also means asking what it means to extract it from the earth. Extracting doesn't necessarily mean blind consumption, but rather recognizing availability and limits.
Earthrise 26 It stems from the need to return to the earth as a material with which to converse. The objects on display don't claim to resolve it, but to inhabit it, demonstrating how design can arise from a more conscious relationship with what the planet offers us and what we owe it.
The exhibition features 11 projects, bringing together eight projects by Italian designers—seven of which illustrate seven different parts of the country through local materials, practices, and knowledge—and three projects developed as part of the Kortrijk international residency, presented in Turin thanks to the collaboration with Designregio Kortrijk.
Designers on display: Alice Reina, Benedetta Pompili, Claudio Campana, Domenico Mangano and Marieke van Rooy, ISIA Faenza, Kato Herbots, Lorenzo Silvestri, Lou Cruard, Nina Salsotto Cassina, Trama Studio, Uģis Albiņš.
