Earthrise 24 – Design for a Living Planet

EARTHRISE 24 explores design working at the intersection of the environmental crisis and the most pressing contemporary political and social issues. Investigating design as a lever for change towards a more equitable and ecological society, we have focused on social ecology, selecting projects and practices that reflect on the connections between natural elements, living beings and artefacts, and that rely on the involvement of different types of collectivities: from small communities of artisans to civic involvement.

Social ecology is a radical philosophy that correlates ecological issues with political and social ones. It is an interdisciplinary field that ranges from architecture to philosophy, from political and social theory to anthropology, from economics to natural sciences. It is from this current of thought, and in particular from Murray Bookchin's book The Ecology of Freedom - considered a classic of utopian thought - that the theme of Earthrise 2024 is developed.

The new edition of Earthrise, curated by Salvatore Peluso (freelance journalist, educator and independent curator) presents the exhibition “Ecology is social, in practice”, a three-month residency involving the German designer Jannis Zell who works in Turin collaborating with communities, artisans and interdisciplinary experts, and a program of events made up of collective actions and talks in which to investigate and put into practice the key themes of social ecology, to reflect on a sustainable future, possible only through shared planning and practices.
